Jewish travellers

The Beta Israel kept their own Jewish tradition in northern Ethiopia, around Gondar and Lake Tana, for well over a thousand years. Most emigrated to Israel, especially during Operation Moses in 1984 and Operation Solomon in 1991, so the community in Ethiopia is now small, but its heritage lives on in villages near Gondar such as Wolleka, and Addis Ababa has a synagogue and a Chabad house. • The synagogue and Chabad house in Addis Ababa are run by Chabad Ethiopia. Get in touch before you visit.
  • Kosher: there's no kosher restaurant in Addis, and local meat isn't kosher (it isn't slaughtered by a shochet). Chabad Ethiopia serves kosher meals and Shabbat dinner; contact them ahead.
  • The vegan Orthodox "fasting food" served on Wednesdays and Fridays is an easy option everywhere.
  • Check current travel advice before visiting the Gondar region.
