Get around the city

In Addis Ababa, ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to get around. RIDE, Feres and Yango all operate; Uber does not. Install one before you fly, and pay the driver in cash unless the app offers another method.

Ride apps

Fares are shown upfront; pay the driver in cash or by mobile money.

Other ways around the city

Minibus taxis

Blue-and-white minibuses run fixed shared routes; the conductor calls the destination and collects the fare. About 10 to 65 Br depending on distance. Carry small notes.

City buses

Anbessa and Sheger buses cost about 10 Br for up to 12 km. Pay the conductor in cash. Crowded at rush hour.

Light rail

Two lines cross the city for a few birr per trip, distance-based. Buy a ticket at the station window, or with telebirr at some stations. Riding without a ticket costs a 100 Br fine.

Traffic drives on the rightLook left first when you cross, and expect minibuses to stop anywhere.

Good to know

  • Download RIDE, Feres or Yango from your app store before you travel.
  • Register with a phone number that can receive SMS. A local SIM works best (see SIM cards and mobile internet).
  • Enter your destination and check the fare.
  • Check the driver's name, car and plate number when the car arrives.
  • Make sure the trip has started in the app, and share it with a friend.
